WHAT CAN & DOES ANABC REP DO?

ABCReps help groups navigate the Columbia bureaucracy, aid groups in event &financial planning and support the development of student life on campus. Repsare advocates for the groups they oversee and are crucial in identifying areasin which ABC, the administration, and other student leaders can help improvestudents' experiences at Columbia.

TheRep sits on the Activities Board, which consists of 20 members. Throughout theyear, the ABC votes on the allocation of funds, recognition of student groups, the granting of appeals and has a vital role in determining the agenda for theActivities Board. We are seeking 13 highly motivated and passionate individualsto apply for these positions. Academic or Pre-Professional(1)

Performance: Dance(1)

Performance:Instrumental/Vocal (1)

Performance: Theater(1)

1) Why do you want tobe an ABC rep?

We can all vouch forthe inhumane and occasionally demoralizing process that is Columbiabureaucracy.  ItÕs confusing andcomplicated, but we all have to deal with it so we should make the situationthe best it can be.   IÕd loveto be an ABC representative so that I can demystify the roadblocks thatinterfere with many studentsÕ sleep, peace, and general well being.  I am pro-student.  I am pro-you.

2) As an ABC Rep,which groups would you be most interested in representing? Explain yourinterest in those groups as well as any prior experience with those groups orother related qualifications.

As an ABC Rep, IÕd behappy to represent any groups on campus, but my areas of expertise lie inSpecial Interest and Performance: Theatre groups.  Many special interest groups reflect small, but mightymembership.  These groups need aliaison between them and the administration because the the fine print andlegal jumble can seem daunting.

I was also producerof The Vagina Monologues this year, allowing me to dive head first into theanguish cloud that is space requests and financial fact checking.  There are several things that IÕd doahead of time that would have made the production a tenfold easier with which Iwould be all too familiar as an ABC rep.

3) Name some changesthat you believe would positively impact ABC?

IÕd also like to seeall ABC representatives have a baseline of policy and administrative knowledgespecific to the groups with which we liaison.  There should also ideally be an in-person meeting at thebeginning of each academic semester (and perhaps more if need be) between theABC representative and their groups to facilitate open dialogue between studentgroups and efficiency of future programming.

ItÕd also be great tosee the ABC acting as a more unified and efficient governing body.  WeÕll need popcorn and ice breakers!

4) Name 1-3 policyinitiatives that you think ABC should pursue next year.

First and foremost, Iwould love to streamline the process of looking space for auditions, clubmeetings, and events.  The currentelectronic format can be tedious and delayed, creating undue amounts of stresswhen the organizer has no place to have meetings for the next day.

ABC should also beclear about their budget allocations. There is oft too much confusion about the distribution of sums.
