Description: The Helvidius Group was established in 1989 by Peter Tomassi, CC '91, to provide an undergraduate forum for the discussion of diverse issues concerning law, politics, and public policy. The Journal of Politics & Society, an annual publication featuring both national and international undergraduate work on the political and social sciences, is the realization of that mission. Originally an annual magazine distributed to Ivy League universities and to members of Congress, it has become more scholarly in focus and grown to include international affairs, economics, history, sociology, anthropology, and urban studies. In the 2006-2007 academic year, the Helvidius Group seeks to expand upon its founding mission once more by increasing its ability to act as a forum for undergraduate discussion of political and social issues. In addition to publishing its 18th issue this year, the Helvidius Groups seeks to organize a conference featuring the best of undergraduate student work, from both Columbia University and a select number of U.S. colleges, in the political and social sciences at Columbia University
